Treatment Options

If you have a blood disorder, it is possible for you to enjoy a normal life – with the proper treatments. Your treatment plan will depend on the type and severity of the disorder you have. Our hematologists will work with you to craft a plan designed to give you the best possible outcome.

Hemophilia Treatments

Hemophilia can impact your body’s ability to naturally stop bleeding, also known as hemostasis. Replacement therapy, to supplement your body’s clotting factor, is the primary treatment for hemophilia. Clotting factor is infused into your blood stream. Depending on the severity of your hemophilia, you may receive preventive replacement therapy or regularly scheduled treatments that help prevent bleeding.

Alternatively, you may receive demand therapy in which infusions are given only as needed. Both types of treatments can be done at home.

In some cases, you can be treated with man-made hormones and other medicines.

Anemia Treatments

Anemia treatment can reduce blood loss, increase the survival or production of red blood cells, and increase the amount of oxygen in the blood. The exact treatment depends on the severity and type anemia you have, but can include:

  • Dietary and nutritional changes or supplements, including taking iron, Vitamin B12, folic acid, and Vitamin C. Iron can be replenished through foods like eggs, fish, meat, poultry, beans, green-leaf vegetables, and fruits.
  • Medication such as antibiotics or hormones
  • Some patients may need a blood transfusion as part of their treatment

Thrombosis

Some clotting disorders can cause thrombosis or the formation of abnormal blood clots. The clots can become embedded in a major vein or artery, blocking blood circulation. Blood clots can cause pain, swelling, or warmth in the affected area, and can be life-threatening. Blood clots can be treated with blood thinning medications and compression stockings.

Comprehensive anticoagulation and thrombosis management include outpatient and in-hospital management of anticoagulant medications, as well as comprehensive outpatient treatment for deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and evaluation and management of patients with thrombotic disorders. Most patients with deep vein thrombosis can be evaluated and treated in our office setting without needing a hospital admission.
