Dr. Gogel received a bachelor of science degree, cum laude, from Union College in Schenectady, New York, where he was on the Dean's List of Distinguished Students, was a member of Pi Sigma Alpha's National Political Science Honor Society and Beta Beta Beta National Biology Honor Society. He received his medical degree at Albany Medical College in Albany, New York, where he was awarded for clinical honors in general surgery. Dr. Gogel completed his internship and residency at Baylor University Medical Center, in Dallas, Texas, and completed his fellowship in hepatobiliary surgery and solid organ transplantation also at Baylor Medical Center. Prior to joining Texas Oncology, Dr. Gogel was in private practice with Southwest Surgical Oncology Associates. He has authored and co-authored numerous articles in peer reviewed journals, as well as presenting at national conferences.

Dr. Gogel is a member of the Society of Surgical Oncology, the American Hepatopancreaticobiliary Surgery Association, the American College of Surgeons, the Dallas County Medical Society, the Texas Medical Society and the Society of Baylor Surgeons. He was the recipient of the Ralph R. Thompsett Writing Award for his publication The Effect of Office-Based Thyroid Ultrasound on Clinical Decision Making and was awarded an Outstanding Research Award by the Department of Surgery at Baylor University Medical Center.
