Fun and Simple Activities for Holiday Gatherings
The holidays are a time when friends and family gather to celebrate traditions and make new memories. However, coping with cancer during this time of year is especially difficult. As the holidays approach, you may be looking for new ways to find holiday cheer after a cancer diagnosis. With Texas Oncology’s community-based care, patients can spend the holidays in the comfort of their own home, surrounded by loved ones. To make the most of the season, here are a few ways you can gather together during the holidays.
Host a game night
After your holiday meal, invite everyone to stay for an afternoon or evening of games. Pick up an inexpensive “prize” for the winner and pull out the dominoes, a board game, or another family favorite. Find a list of family-friendly games using a simple deck of cards here.
Work a puzzle
The holidays usually involve lots of time in the kitchen. Before meal preparations heat up, put a puzzle out nearby so loved ones can sit comfortably while being part of the fun.
Make a batch of Merry Mulling Mix
Add some extra spice to your holiday gatherings with our alcohol-free mulled cider recipe.
Check out a holiday light display
Brighten the season by visiting a local holiday light display. Many light displays are drivable and synced to local radio stations, allowing all to enjoy the glittering lights from the comfort of your vehicle, making this an ideal holiday activity for someone undergoing or recovering from cancer treatment.
Host a movie marathon
There’s nothing better than a feel-good holiday movie. Gather friends and family for a holiday movie marathon. It’s a great way to get everyone in the holiday spirit without risking over-exertion. As a bonus, make it a pajama party!
Bring caroling home
Caroling is such an iconic part of the season – it spans generations and delights both young and old. This year, gather inside with your family to sing favorite holiday songs together. A karaoke machine loaded with holiday favorites will keep everyone on key.
Take a trip down memory lane
One of the best parts of the holidays is being able to reflect back on your favorite family memories. Dust off those old photo albums and home video tapes and enjoy the stories and laughs that follow.
Make fleece tie blankets
Spend time with family by making simple fleece tie blankets together. There’s no sewing required, so everyone can participate. If you have enough hands to make several, you can even donate a few to your Texas Oncology cancer center. Here are some helpful instructions.
Have story time
While you’re sipping on eggnog or cider, snuggle up in the living room as one family member reads a favorite holiday story. It’s fun for kids and adults alike.
Play 50 questions
Gather everyone together for a round of fun Q&As. Who knows, you might learn something new about one of your family members!
